Opis
kolegija

Course objectives:
Introducing students with the breadth of anthropology as a uniquely comparative and holistic science based on the cross-cultural perspective.
Course content:
Four-field anthropology: biological (physical) anthropology, cultural (socio-cultural) anthropology, linguistic anthropology and archeology. Applied and medical anthropology. Evolutionary theory and natural selection. Basics of contemporary genetics. Forensic anthropology and identification of remains. Anthropological critique of the race concept. Microevolution and macroevolution. Genetics and origins of modern human. Consequences of domestication, cultivation and sedentism. Anthropological definitions of culture. Ethnographic methods and production of anthropological knowledge. Language, culture and thought. Symbolic practices. Myth and ritual. Kinship. Social inequality, race and ethnicity: implications for health and well-being. Cultural processes in a global world.

Regular class attendance – attending at least 70% of lectures and seminar sessions;
Fulfilled seminar duties – oral presentation based on desk research of the assigned anthropological topic;
Accumulating at least 35% of grade through class activities (two exams and one seminar presentation).

Način ocjenjivanja

Final course grade is based on 100 points earned through student’s continuous involvement in class activities:
Fair (2) – 50 to 64 points
Good (3) – 65 to 79 points
Very good (4) – 80 to 89 points
Excellent (5) – 90 to 100 points
Earning credits:
Class activities contribute to 70% of the grade:
Seminar presentation – maximum 10 points
First exam – maximum 30 points
Second exam – maximum 30 points
Final exam contributes to 30% of the grade:
Final exam – maximum of 30 points (50% of correct answers necessary for passing)
