GRADUATE UNIVERSITY STUDIES IN SOCIOLOGY

In brief!

Academic title: Master of Sociology (mag. soc.)

Duration of studies: 4 semesters

Completion of studies: a minimum of 120 ECTS credits, passing of all exams and thesis defence presentation

Students are offered a graduate university course of study in Sociology entitled Governance and Public Policies, which is based on an assessment of the current social context, the situation on the labour market and the latest tendencies in the education of Masters of Sociology.

In each semester, students take compulsory and elective courses (a minimum of 30 ECTS credits).

As a rule, the students’ work in all courses is evaluated throughout the semester through periodic tests (preliminary exams, tests) and based on activities at lectures, seminars and exercises (account for 70% of the final mark) and the final exam (account for 30% of the final mark). This model encourages students to study regularly and master the teaching material.

What are you going to learn?

Graduate studies offer students theoretical and methodical knowledge as well as the professional and specific skills required for sociologists’ work and their further scientific development. Students will acquire more comprehensive knowledge, develop the required competences and skills in the field of sociology of settlements, territory and environment, governance and public policies, social ethics and in the fields covering individual theoretical and methodological areas of sociology. They will also gain additional knowledge in economics and law.

 

Programme for Acquiring Teacher’s Qualifications

The Programme for Acquiring Teacher’s Qualification (PT) is a life-long learning programme. Accommodating the PT to the studies implemented at our University has proved to be necessary for ensuring the acquisition of qualifications permitting our students to work in educational institutions. Additional courses included in this programme (psychology, education sciences, didactics, methods of teaching, etc.) enable them to acquire professional knowledge and skills such as:

  1. Develop teaching qualifications;
  2. Mobilise and encourage students to study;
  3. Create and uphold an environment conducive to studying;
  4. Organise teaching subjects;
  5. Plan teaching and the processes of instruction and study;
  6. Mark and evaluate knowledge.

 

Upon completing their studies, students receive a Certificate. The Certificate is proof that the student in entitled to work in educational institutions, as prescribed in the Act on Education in Primary and Secondary Schools (Article 105), and has earned 60 ECTS credits of teaching qualifications. The Certificate is also one of the required conditions for passing an examination of professional aptitude.

 

What can you do after your studies?

After completing their graduate studies in sociology, students are qualified to work in the civil service, public administration, diplomatic service, media and publishing houses, tourism, education, cultural and other institutions. Having completed graduate studies, students fulfil the conditions to enrol in postgraduate university (doctoral) studies.
